It was two days after I got separated from Merida,kasami-sensei.deviantart.com/a… but we kept walking. I had to, Flynn wouldn't have it any other way. He says that walking keeps you two steps ahead of the walkers, but I was tired and so was he.
And we really needed supplies. I had run out of what little food and first aid supplies I packed, and Flynn was almost out of ammunition in that bottomless satchel he carried.
I didn't want to be negative, but Flynn wasn't very talkative today. I wanted to connect with him, I didn't want to feel like a burden.
"So... Flynn," I said, starting conversation. "Where are you from?"
"Whoa, Blondie." He used that nickname again. It's cute. "I don't do backstory. But I am a little curious about yours. Now I don't know if its too personal to ask if you have any family-"
"Frankly I'm too scared to ask about Braveheart."
"Merida." I reminded.
"Nuance. But what I should ask is pretty important." He looked in my eyes, turning serious again. "Have you ever shot a gun before?"
"Well you should learn how to. It's the best chance against walkers I've found."
"I have my frying pan." I showed him it, it still had that first brain stain.
"You do and quite frankly I'm scared to cross you when you have that." As he should. "But it's something important you should learn."
"I learned a lot, you know."
"And that's good. We need someone who knows there way around a first aid kit." He said, looking at me sincerely. I felt my cheeks flush at his stare. "Speaking of, how are we on medicine?"
"Not too good."
"Well when we find a- HALLELUJAH!"
His outburst made me jump, but then I saw what he was yelling about and I yelled too. I never felt so happy to see the mall in my life.
"There's no telling what we can find in there." He said, looking like a kid on Christmas day. It might as well have been. "Maybe we'll find some food."
"Or some new clothes."
"Maybe even running water!" We said at the same time, which made us laugh. I smiled at him, he smiled back. Looks like having a light of hope does do you good. Just like Mother and Father used to say.
"Race ya'!" I bolted down the hill before he could spit out a response.
When he finally caught up with me at the door, we got serious again. We went in and I had forced myself to not freak out. It's been too long since I've seen anything that wasn't a tree or grass.
We looked around for a long time. Most of the stores were locked out and some didn't even have anything worth taking. I've never liked stealing, even before all this happened. There are other people who could use it instead of me. But Flynn always had an argument for why it was okay.
"No one to catch you. And you're only in trouble when you get caught."
"The world is crumbling apart Blondie. Feel free to follow the rules that aren't there anymore."
"Do you think a walker would look good in these pumps?"
We FINALLY found a store that would have clothes for the both of us. He went with me to look for my clothes first. That was kind of sweet of him.
"Finally, Lady Luck is on our side." He said as he rifled around the rows of shirts.
"What are we looking for exactly?" I ask checking for pants.
"Something that will last. Or at the very least, something that will fit." He held up a purple graphic tee that was FAR too big. "You're so tiny."
"I'm a growing girl." Ooh. These jeans might work.
"Here." He said, tossing a pink tank top into my arms. "You go change, I'm going to check in the back for any first aid kind of stuff."
"Okay." Then I began a search for a changing room, taking my frying pan just to be safe. I found one by the mens area, and a blue vest that Flynn would probably like.
I headed inside and I saw my reflection for the first time in a long time. I was a mess. I still had some twigs and leaves in my ponytail, there was blood that wasn't mine on my shirt, tears in my skirt, and my shoes were ratted out by now. I pulled my hair out of the tie. I'm in need of a change. We all are.
I dragged my old clothes off of my tired body, then slipped the new ones on. I went to pull up my jeans when a rotten hand grabbed at my ankle. A walker grabbed me in the CHANGING STALL! I shrieked and whammed my frying pan over its head.
I scurried to the other side of the cramped space, trying to put as much distance from it as I could. Was it dead? Like dead dead? I think it was, I pulled my pants up and checked, tapping it with the pan. It's dead.
It twitched. I whammed it again. This one did the trick, the pan was coated with walker brains and blood. Gross.
I walked out, scraping the remains of the dead person off the wall.
I ran outside and Flynn was standing there out of breath and looking very worried.
"I thought I heard you scream." He said panting.
Oh he was worried. Aww. No, no, just play it off. Play it cool."Oh. I did, it was a walker."
"Yeah it was in the stall next to me. It grabbed my leg but I got it."
"You got it?"
He looked so preplexed and at the same time impressed. "Wow. That's pretty impressive, Blondie."
"I know!" Uh-oh. I broke the cool. I can still save it. "I know."
He's smiling again. "They fit okay?"
"Yeah, they do." Now she noticed that he had put on the vest she found and popped open a few of his top buttons. "You look good too."
"Thanks. I found some medical supplies."
